Two memory foam pillows can look identical on a shelf, cost the same, and feel almost the same the first night — and one of them will be flat and lifeless in eight months while the other still holds its shape after three years. The difference is never in the marketing words on the box. It is in three numbers most sellers never print.
What memory foam actually is
Memory foam is viscoelastic polyurethane foam. "Viscoelastic" is the whole point: it behaves partly like a solid that springs back and partly like a thick liquid that flows and takes time to recover. Press your hand into it and the impression stays for a moment before slowly filling back in. That slow, molding response is what spreads your weight out and takes pressure off the sharp points — the ear, the jaw, the shoulder — instead of pushing back against them the way a spring or a firm fibre pillow does.
The material was originally developed under a NASA contract in the 1960s to cushion aircraft seats, and only became a consumer product decades later. NASA still lists it among its best-known spinoff technologies (see the NASA Technology Transfer program). What matters for a pillow is the behaviour, not the pedigree: memory foam responds to heat and pressure. It softens where your body warms it and stays firmer where it is cool, which is why the same pillow can feel different in a hot room than a cold one — and why "response time" is a real specification, not a marketing flourish.
The three numbers that decide a good pillow
If a supplier or a product page gives you only one of these, you are not looking at a specification. You are looking at a claim.
Density (kg/m³) is how much polyurethane is packed into the foam. It is the single best predictor of how long the pillow will last, and it matters far more than most buyers expect. It is measured to standards such as ISO 845. Memory foam pillows typically run 40–80 kg/m³. Below roughly 45 kg/m³, the foam tends to lose its rebound and go permanently flat within a year; genuine high-density memory foam at 60 kg/m³ and up keeps molding and recovering for years. Density is not firmness — a dense pillow can be soft, and a low-density one can feel firm at first — so do not let a seller substitute one word for the other.
Firmness (ILD / IFD) is how much force it takes to compress the foam by a set amount — indentation load deflection, measured under methods like ISO 2439 or ASTM D3574. This is the resistance you actually feel. It decides comfort together with loft (height), and the right value depends entirely on the sleeper, which the next section covers.
Temperature sensitivity / response time is how fast the foam recovers after you lift the pressure off. A slow-response foam sinks deeply and cradles but can feel like it "traps" you and runs warm; a faster-response memory foam moves with you when you turn and sleeps cooler. Neither is better in the abstract — but a pillow that becomes rock-hard in a cold room or sinks to nothing on a hot night is a formulation problem, and it is worth asking a supplier how the foam behaves across a temperature range rather than only at room temperature.

Match the pillow to the sleeper, not the marketing
Comfort is not a fixed property of a pillow. It is the fit between the pillow's loft and firmness and the gap between the sleeper's head and the mattress. The goal is simple and physical: keep the neck in line with the spine, neither propped up nor dropped down. A pillow that does that for a side sleeper will be wrong for someone who sleeps on their stomach.

This is also why one-size "best pillow" claims are meaningless. The right question is never "is this a good pillow" but "is this the right loft and firmness for how this person sleeps." The main types, and what each is actually for
- Solid (block) memory foam — one moulded piece. Consistent support, the most "classic" memory-foam feel. Fixed loft, so it must be matched to the sleeper up front.
- Contour / cervical — a moulded wave shape with a higher edge for the neck and a lower centre for the head. Good for back and side sleepers who want deliberate neck support; wrong for anyone who moves a lot or sleeps on their stomach.
- Shredded memory foam — chopped foam in a case. The killer feature is adjustability: unzip it and add or remove fill to tune the loft. It also breathes better than a solid block. The trade-off is a slightly less uniform surface.
- Gel-infused / open-cell — memory foam modified to run cooler. Gel beads or gel swirl draw heat away; open-cell structure lets air move through. Both address memory foam's oldest complaint — heat retention — with a usually small effect on feel.
Gel and open-cell are worth understanding because "sleeps hot" is the number-one reason people abandon a memory foam pillow. If temperature is the concern, a shredded or open-cell construction generally does more than a gel layer alone, but the honest answer is that any dense foam holds some heat, and cover fabric and room airflow matter too.
What makes a memory foam pillow fail
A pillow rarely breaks. It quietly stops doing its job, and there are only a few ways that happens:
- Permanent flattening (compression set). The foam takes a lasting impression and never fully recovers. This is the classic low-density failure — the pillow gets thinner, the neck drops out of alignment, and the support you paid for is gone. Compression set is measurable under ASTM D3574; a serious supplier can quote it.
- Off-gassing that never quite leaves. New memory foam releases a chemical smell for the first days — normal, and it should fade. A cheap or poorly cured foam keeps a faint odour for weeks. This is where emissions certification matters: programs like CertiPUR-US test foam for restricted substances and low VOC emissions. It is one of the few third-party signals a buyer can actually verify.
- Heat build-up. Covered above — a construction problem more than a defect, but a real reason products get returned.
- Cover failure. The foam outlives a thin, non-removable cover. A removable, washable cover is a small thing that decides whether the pillow is still usable in year two.
If you are sourcing at volume: how to read a supplier
For a retail buyer or importer, the pillow itself is only half the decision — the other half is whether the factory behind it can repeat what they sent in the sample. A few questions separate a manufacturer from a trader:
- Ask for density and ILD as numbers, not adjectives. "Premium high-density" is not a specification. A real foam maker gives you kg/m³ and an ILD/IFD figure, and can tell you which standard they were measured to.
- Ask for compression-set and emissions test data. A supplier who controls their own foam can produce these. One who buys foam and sews covers usually cannot.
- Confirm they pour their own foam. Whether the vendor is a foam manufacturer or a cut-and-sew assembler decides how much of the quality they actually govern. It is a fair question to ask directly.
- Order a sample against a written spec. Agree the density, ILD, loft and cover in writing, then check the sample against it — not against your memory of the sales call.

None of this requires you to be a foam engineer. It requires you to insist on numbers, and to treat a supplier who cannot give them as what they are: someone selling a pillow they did not make and cannot control.
FAQ
How long should a memory foam pillow last? A well-made, high-density memory foam pillow typically holds its shape for two to four years of nightly use. A low-density one can flatten within a year. Density is the main driver — ask for the kg/m³ figure before you buy.
What density is best for a memory foam pillow? For a durable pillow, look for roughly 55–80 kg/m³. Below about 45 kg/m³ the foam tends to lose rebound quickly. Density controls lifespan, not softness, so a dense pillow is not automatically a firm one.
