Density (kg/m³) is how much polyurethane is packed into the foam, and it is the best single predictor of lifespan. It is measured to standards such as ISO 845. Memory foam pillows typically run 40–80 kg/m³; lower-density foam tends to flatten within a year, while genuine high-density foam keeps recovering for years. Density is not firmness — insist the supplier keep the two separate.

Firmness (ILD / IFD) is the force needed to compress the foam by a set amount — indentation load deflection, measured under methods like ISO 2439 or ASTM D3574. This is the resistance the sleeper actually feels.

Compression set measures how much thickness the foam permanently loses after being held compressed — in other words, how prone it is to going flat. It is also covered by ASTM D3574. A trader almost never has this figure. A foam manufacturer can produce it.

Emissions / restricted-substance status tells you what the foam is made of and what it releases. Third-party programs such as CertiPUR-US test flexible polyurethane foam for restricted substances and low VOC emissions — one of the few signals a buyer can independently verify rather than take on trust.

Certifications that actually mean something

Certificates are easy to display and hard to read. Three are worth understanding because they test different things, and a manufacturer that holds them can explain what each covers:

A supplier who understands the difference between these is a good sign. One who waves a single certificate as proof of everything — or who sends a certificate issued to a different company — is a warning.

  1. Shortlist on production type, not price. Confirm each candidate pours its own foam (or be clear you're accepting an assembler). Drop pure traders unless you specifically need consolidation.
  2. Request specifications in writing. Get density, ILD/IFD, and — if durability matters — compression set, each with its test standard. Ask for the emissions certificate and verify it at the certifier's own site, not just the PDF they sent.
